half a century

22nd August 2016, Embleton Bay, 7am

My birthday week began in Glasgow, continues back home in Northumberland and will end on Orkney. Three places that are very special to me... Lots of music, friends and moments of precious solitude in between. Perfect.

22nd August 2016, Ship Inn, 7pm

The Ship Inn at Low newton hosts a folk music session on the 4th Monday in the month and, it being close to my birthday we had special beer and a cake with Daisy on it...

23rd August 2016, Newton Point, 9am

My birthday walk.  We stopped at our favourite rocky perch and watched the sea for a while...

24th August 2016, Embleton Bay, 8am

The waves look beautiful in the sun up close and from up high...

Arrival

19th August 2016, Beadnell Bay, 6:30pm

We arrived at the beach after our run. Daisy scanned the beach for friends to play with but the beach was empty.  So she just had me to play with...

19th August 2016, Embleton Bay, 10am

Some child has drawn round their hand on this driftwood log. It reminds me of some of the earliest examples of human cave art and is an interesting connection between humans across time.

Hare brained

18th August 2016, Christon Bank, 7am

She saw a hare running into the wheat field but however keen, she's not getting off the lead...

18th August 2016, Dunstanburgh Castle, 8pm

An all too rare evening walk with the sun on the other side of the sky.

colour and shapes

17th August 2016, Low Newton dunes, 10am

As the beach got busier me and June took our PhotoWalk up into the dunes.

Intertwined with each other the ever-present ferns and the non-native montbresia make a natural flower arrangement of dark greens and vivid orange. Overlooked and hidden at the side of a well trodden path, the flowers bear the colours of the rising sun and the ferns reveal a patterned beauty in black and white too.

before the coble

15th August 2016, Embleton Bay, 5:41am

I was awake at 5:30 and it was a nice morning, and the sunrise was due at 5:41 so off we went.

The bonny silhouette of a long dog

The Skaith had a thin veil of mist when we arrived

The beach was empty

We were even here before the coble arrived...

15th August 2016, Dunstan Steads, 9am

Out for a cycle along the Route 1 cycle path passing fields of nearly ripe barley.

all is revealed

14th August 2016, Embleton Bay, 6:30am

As is often the case, what looked like dull grey weather a mile inland revealed beautiful light on the sea.

solitude and friends

11th August 2016, Football Hole, 4pm

We found a pyramid so Daisy did her sphinx impression...

12th August 2016, Football Hole, 7am

After running up to Beadnell we stopped on the way back down for a play on the big empty beach.  It's not Copa Cabana but we love it!

The wind had sculpted platforms for each shell or pebble and the morning sun did the rest...

13th August 2016, Newton Point, 6:30am

We were wandering around in the morning sun but there were quite a few people about it being the height of summer and a sunny Saturday.  We met Daisy's friends so she got a bit of a play, we managed to avoid the tourists' dogs (always an unknown quantity) and we still found a bit of the solitude I enjoy.

flowers in the rain

11th August 2016, Bamburgh, 10am

This morning's PhotoWalk was around Bamburgh.  There are few things as British as a funfair in the rain...

...and few things as beautiful as harebells in the rain.

just warmed up

10th August 2016, Beadnell Bay, 7am

We ran up to Beadnell Harbour and returned by the beach.  The Long Nanny was thigh deep so Daisy had to swim.  As a reward we stopped off for a play.  Daisy isn't even slightly tired out by a 5K jog...
