walk - run - sleep

31st January 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

We walked up to Dunstanburgh Castle. A dull day like this is the best time to photograph the cannonball boulders and they're always nice in black and white.  These are all iphone images.

Then it was down onto the beach where Daisy met her lurcher and saluki pals Sophie and Freddy for a mad sprint around the sand...

..before heading home for a bit of shut-eye for a tired hound.

Some Seaweed

30th January 2014, Embleton Bay, 9am

Since the last time I posted it's been grey skies and more rain than we're used to. It was nice that it stopped raining for today's PhotoTrail but we were glad to get to the golf club for a hot coffee today !!

Here's some seaweed

sundog

23rd January 2014, Newton Links, 3pm

The sky was blue but it was freezing cold.

First off a study of textures of sand and water...

Daisy wanted to walk by the dunes and I wanted to be in the sun down by the water. I briefly persuaded her to come into the sunlight then she was off again.

stripes

21st January 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

Nice clouds this morning reflected on the wet sand.

The sun came up behind the clouds stripey and orange. Daisy was away in the dunes so I was able to get closer than normal to the Oyster Catchers.

worth the wait

20th January 2014, Howick, 8am

The day started grey and frosty. The car was well frozen this morning with ice inside and out and the engine temperature never moved all the way to Howick so there was no warm air to warm my toes.

We wandered for a while, uninspired photographically but happy to be out and about. There was no wind but the big sea was roaring and crashing onto the rocks.

I'd noticed a gap in the clouds just above the horizon so I decided to wait and see what happened when the sun reached the gap. Meanwhile I stomped about trying to keep warm by picking up some litter and photographing frosty things in the flat light.

When the sun reached the hole in the clouds the whole shoreline was bathed in a warm light and it was transformed from grey to gold.

Daisy took the opportunity to scan the fields and together we watched a hare lolloping around for a while.  Patience and landscape photography go together and I was pleased that we waited a few minutes.

Real Weather

19th January 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

Daisy and I raced the last few yards to the top of the dune. I won, but only because the path was narrow and she couldn't pass.

There she sat, her back to the wind, scanning the golf course for Animals of Interest while I panted and wheezed and faced the elements. Being out of breath meant I happily drew in more than my fair share of the fresh, salty air.

The sea, tempestuous and roaring, filled the air with the smell of the ocean. I rocked to and fro in the wind while the rain pecked at my face making me blink when drops hit my eyes.

Bad weather? No, this is real weather. Weather you can feel, taste, smell, hear and see.

peaceful seascape

13th January 2014, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

A bit earlier than normal today and the pre-dawn seascape was peaceful and beauitful. On the horizon a ship heads North lights ablaze.

An hour later and the sun's up now.

cowless

12th January 2014, Football Hole, 8am

We're gradually migrating North as the cows are taken off the dunes. It was the first time we'd been on Football Hole from this side since the warmth of August and it was nice to be back though the sand was frozen hard.

1st the dog lover's view...

...now the photographer's view.

Wonderful sunrise this morning with the tide at a nice mid-point and the waves big enough to be interesting.

Just before dawn and the Big Northumbrian sky is a perfect picture of serenity

The sun backlit Daisy's fur

My favourite tree near the foot of The Long Walk. It always catches the last rays of afternoon sun.

Soft Sun

6th January 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

From the first light at the horizon, yesterday's sun was blazing and bright as if eager to get on with lighting up the day. This morning in contrast the sun came up from its blanket of clouds like many a reluctant commuter off to work on a dark Monday.

Daisy enjoyed the strengthening wind in her fur and turned her nose towards the breeze to see what news it carried

The gulls also enjoyed the SE wind as they soared and glided by looking to see what the new day would bring

The recent storms and tidal surges have uncovered the windows of this pill box.  Previously only the top few inches were above the sand.
