scary!

31st October 2016, Embleton Bay, 8am

I suppose shadows are a bit scary for halloween...

31st October 2016, Seahouses Harbour 9:30am

A wander around the harbour,  I was brave enough to ask these chaps if I could photograph them.  I can't decide if I prefer it with or without dog so you get both!

Saturday 29 October 2016

anticipation

29th October 2016, Beadnell Bay, 7am

Today's sunrise was 8:07 BST, tomorrow the sunrise will be 7:09 GMT

Last night's sunset was so beautiful and the joy of a high pressure system is that not much changes from day to day.  So when I saw similar clouds in the half light of 7am and I figured it would be a nice sunrise.

We walked up the back of the dunes keeping an eye over my shoulder to see what was developing.  We just nicely reached the Long Nanny river and turned back South in time for the rising sun (still hidden) to start lighting the clouds from beneath the horizon.

After hanging about a bit near the sand patterns we headed on down the beach.  Daisy is not impressed by sunrises and prefers the pre-dawn half light.  she wanted to play.

To the North was a rainbow.  The first time I've seen a rainbow before the sun was above the horizon.

And here it comes...

Some will call me a killjoy but Glyn Hopkin, a car sales company in SE England has released this helium balloon which has ended up as litter on our beach.  How many ended up choking sea animals?  How much blood is on their hands?  I tweeted this picture as part of the Marine Conservation Society's campaign to ban balloon releases in the UK.  I'm pleased to say they are illegal in many counties already including Northumberland County Council.

Soft morning

28th October 2016, Beadnell Bay, 8am

A soft light filtered through beautiful clouds.  Not that is grey is dull.

An angle I've never photographed from before.  Looking to the sunset reflected in Newton Pool

Thursday 27 October 2016

getting perspective

27th October 2016, Dunstanburgh, 7:30am

I walked up to the Castle with its silhouette strong against the dawn sky. Behind me the sun was already shining onto the sands of Embleton Bay.

If I'd been further North on Embleton Bay, the sun would have been rising from the middle of the sea (see yesterday's photos).  A half a mile South and the new day's sun would have been directly onto the castle walls from the Craster side).

You don't have to move far to completely change the perspective of a view. An understanding, or at least awareness, of this helps the photographer plan their day more effectively.

better than twice round the park

26th October 2016, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

A lovely sunrise this morning.  We had the beach to ourselves until a horde (well 6 or 7) joggers came round the bend in the beach all enjoying the sunrise as they ran.

It struck me how amazing running on the beach must be when you're on holiday and are used to 'twice round the park'.  I'm very spoiled seeing as this is my normal running track and have never run round a park...

Tuesday 25 October 2016

double sunrise

25th October 2016, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

A beautiful sunrise which I though was just for me and the dog until one other couple turned up to watch too.

The sun rose, disappeared into a cloud and then rose all over again!

Daisy's "throw the blooming' ball" face

25th October 2016, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

I wandered around Amble harbour today as part of a 1:1 photo training session. What a lovely spot this is these days.

It was so nice in the sun with a buzz of happy holidaymakers around the crafty pods. No-one in the bright beach huts but it is October!

A walk down the beach in bonny late afternoon light.

22nd October 2016, Beadnell Bay, 6pm

The Easterly wind is stirring the sea back up again...

23rd October 2016, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

Sunrise isn't til 8:07 and I want to be home by 8 as our day trip to Glasgow beckons. Oh well...

Put the dog on the lead
Or she'll run all day
And homeward we must go

Friday 21 October 2016

Happy Birthday to me

21st October 2016

The blog's first post was on this day 8 years ago

1337 posts later and it's still going!

Thanks to my regular blog followers - I'll still be walking and snapping for a few years yet!

Here are some shots from that first post...

21st October 2008, Dunstanburgh Castle, 8am

We were walking up the golf course, Trooper the one-eyed hound with his favourite old football in his gob as usual, and we were blinded by the morning sun. I noticed the shadow of the Castle tower on the golf course so I headed into it to shield my eyes from the glare. When I was in the shadow I noticed paler patches on the grass. These were the from the light streaming through the windows of the tower and with a bit of playing about I was able to get the alignment just right for the photo. This alignment happens in October and around March and is visible now when the clouds permit. There's nothing mystical or deliberate about this alignment. It only happens because Lillburn tower has only got one wall left!

Back down to the beach at Embleton Bay with the sun now well above the tower.
