leaves and light

4th May10, Christon Bank, 8am

At this time of year there is a different flower appearing every week. Forget-me-Not is the latest and one of my favourites.

4th May10, Broad Wood, Ellingham, 4pm

A new walk today following up a cycle around here earlier today. Being broad-leaved woods, Broad Wood's flowers are different and more numerous than those of the conifer plantation at home. Bluebells are starting to appear along with wild garlic, wood anemones, primroses, cowslips, lady's bedstraw etc etc. The leaves are coming quickly now on all the trees and the native and newly arrived migrant birds are in full song. The young foliage filters the sunlight and, along with the melifluous music of the birds, the woodland is filled with a very special atmosphere. None of this would matter if not for a well laid out footpath that meanders through the woods and grants access to the arboreal depths.

...it has exactly the same name & meaning in German: Vergissmeinnicht (written in one word).

Vergiss = forget
mein = me
nicht = not

German and English have definitely the same roots...

It is interesting how languages have a common origin but grew apart and developed differently.

I note the German version is one long word, you like a long word in your language!

You mean words like:

- Mondraketenabschussrampe (moon rocket launching platform)?

or - all time greatest -

- Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän (captain of the Danube Steam Shipping Company)

Yeah! They are gorgeous, aren't they??? ;-)))

On the other hand my forename is 25% shorter than yours... ;-)

Uwe.
