Wet toes

27th June 2016, Embleton Bay, 8am

There is only one boulder with yellow lichen on this part of Embleton Bay and only early in the morning,  at this time of year, does the sun light up this lichen clad boulder such that there is even exposure between it and the sky behind the castle. I only had my phone so the castle is out of focus but you get the idea...

friends

24th June 2016, Dunstanburgh, 7am

The day after the EU referendum and slightly more than half the country have voted to leave the EU while just under half the country have chosen to remain. The result is everyone is falling out with their friends.  Well done politics - you must be very proud.

Daisy is blissfully unaware of all this and so are the clouds and the blue skies.  The ancient castle walls have seen it all before.  Bloodier and greater conflicts have played out beneath these shattered walls where men have died fighting for the ego of politicians and kings and their remains stand in solemn monument to man's folly and self-importance.

24th June 2016, at home, 1pm

It is also "bring your dog to work day" which means business as usual for a home-worker like me.  Daisy was a bit worried by the thunder though... Humans and dogs share a planet but live in very different worlds of what's scary and what's important.

poppies by daylight

23rd June 2016, Bamburgh Castle, 6am

Up early but I knew I was way too late for sunrise.

There were nice wispy clouds and a glorious blue sky so I snapped away happily while Daisy nosed around a new location for her.

Then I found the poppies that I new from recent sunset visits so I spent some time there.

...and eventually forgot all about the castle!

Run with a view

22nd June 2016, Embleton Bay, 9am

I paused my run at a viewpoint for a look over the bay...

sunsets - the fickle mistress

21st June 2016, Bamburgh Castle, 9pm

I've been taking photographs a long time. I've watched sunrises and sunsets come and go and they're unpredictable, fickle tricks of nature. They can look like nothing then explode in colour or they can start well and fade into a grey fug.

On the road to Bamburgh the sky was beautiful with rainbow patches of sun dogs in the clouds to the East.  On arrival I headed for my pre-planned spot to discover that my alignment was wrong and the sunset was well off to the side of the castle.

I took one quick snap and moved my position but I couldn't get the sunset close enough to the castle for the photograph I wanted to make.

I sat high in the dunes and waited and photographed some other compositions.

This is Lindisfarne Castle

But as I watched as the spectacle fizzled away into grey and this is the same view as above just as the sun set at 21:53.

I was all ready to head home with 10 mins before sunset but I remembered how sunrises are often at their best before the sun comes up so maybe it would be the same for this sunset?  Gradually the colour in the sky widened and intensified until it spread to behind the Castle.  It reached a bright orange climax before fading gracefully to twilight.

Time to go home.

Only two layers

20th June 2016, Embleton Bay, 8am

This is the summer solstice due to it being a leap year.

Last night's rain was heading off over the N Sea but when the sun came out it actually got warm enough to take my jacket off!

20th June 2016, Bamburgh Castle, 9:45pm

The solstice sunset at Bamburgh Castle.  A very pleasant hour pre-sunset wandering around the dunes waiting and watching the light change.
