A sundog (or parahelion) above the castle this morning. It lasted just a few moments while the atmospheric conditions and light combined to create it.

At first it just looked grey for today's PhotoTrail. I was with a lovely couple keen to learn more about photography for their impending retirement (sounds good to me!)
But then you spend a bit of time out and about and you watch the weather and the light changing on the land and sea.
You start to see that the sky is more than just grey and that there are patterns everywhere.
Then you start to find photographs all around you.
A stiff breeze on the beach today and definite autumn colours in the ferns as they blew about in the wind.
Back in May the hawthorn blossom was incredible. Now that has translated into a goodly crop of berries...

the light was like gold
16th September 2018, Embleton Bay, 7am
Sometimes it rained, sometimes the sun shone brightly. There was a golden light on the sea and it was a very beautiful place to be.

sunrise story
15th September 2018, Embleton Bay, 6am
Sunrise was at 6:36 and the weather looked promising so we headed down to the beach in plenty of time (the best colours are before the sunrise)
I was glad we did as we had the beach to ourselves and there was only a narrow band of colour between the horizon clouds and the grey clouds above.
We woke up the gulls from their night time roost as we passed the Skaith. No reflections of dawn in the Skate at this time of year. We have to be at, or past, equinox for that.
Some gentle colour SE over the castle
But the vivid colours were out towards the point of sunrise and the reflections on the sea were beautiful.
We walked down until the Emblestones were between us and sunrise for a different shot.
Very quickly the colours faded and the sun disappeared into the higher cloud. I amused myself taking photos of my own footprints while Daisy sniffed about. The waves caught me out though...

same view?
12th September 2018, Embleton Bay, 8am
The old familiar view from the top of the dunes...
The patterns in the waves and sand are unique every moment of every day.

grey and blue
11th September 2018, Embleton Bay, 7:30am
To the south a blanket of grey cloud lingered from overnight rain that is heading away down South.
Round the corner to the North we found the edge of the cloud and there was blue sky trying to brighten the day.

sunflowers
10th September 2018, Newton Point, 4pm
These beauties are part of a (European funded) scheme set up a 10 years ago to provide a habitat and food for over-wintering wild birds. It comes to an end this year.

Just a hundred yards from the sunflowers is our normal beach.
