Lowry

26th Feb 2017, Berwick

A wander around Berwick on a chilly, blustery day.

LS Lowry often visited Berwick and painted here sometimes.  There is a Lowry trail around some of the sites he painted from.  At the lighthouse (see above) there is this panel describing one of his empty sea views from 1942

...and here's the view today showing many similarities with the gentle waves and blue-grey skies.
He liked to include dogs in his paintings too.

messages on the wind

25th Feb 2017, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

Up the top of the dunes waiting for the other dogs to move along the beach so we can get a bit of space for a run about.

26th Feb 2017, Dunstanburgh, 7:30am

We're walking towards the sunrise.  A chilly biting wind is whipping through Daisy's fur but she seems to love to stand in the wind as it brings her smells from far away.

deep breath

21st Feb 2017, Beadnell Bay, 7am

An early start as a day in the big city beckons.

The sunrise was my last deep breath before diving into the world of the city...

relaxed

19th Feb 2017, Embleton Bay, 7am

Not many folk about for sunrise this morning.  Why would you lie in bed when you could be here? - I don't get it.

It suits me to have the beach to ourselves though.  A very peaceful relaxed walk.

time to go?

17th Feb 2017, Beadnell Bay, 7am

The pre-dawn light was beautiful and we wandered up to the Long Nanny bridge.

Back down the beach, still before the sunrise.

Curlews - one of my favourite birds.  Soon they'll leave the coast for their inland moors to breed.  I first heard curlews when I was 3 years old in Leverburgh on Harris and their call is the soundtrack of so many memories from throughout my life.

too windy

16th Feb 2017, Dunstanburgh, 7:45am

Just after sunrise and there are beautiful clouds above the castle.

As we walk a stiff W wind picks up.  The car said 8 degC but it feels more like 2degC and even Daisy was pleased to get back to the shelter of the car and home for a 2nd breakfast.

16th Feb 2017, Newton Point, 4pm

Our walk is an hour later than it was in the winter so we still catch the sunset...

20 minutes

15th Feb 2017, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

The sunrise is back and it's about 20 minutes earlier than the last time I saw it.

15th Feb 2017, Football Hole, 10am

A lovely run through spring-like sunshine.  This time of year the summer birds start to sing but the winter birds are still hanging around.  As I ran north the fields on my left were ringing with skylarks and on the beach to my right a curlew's liquid call wafted over the breeze.

battered

12th February 2017, Newton Point, 8am

Very chilly with a few days of relentless easterly winds blasting grey clouds and sleet at the coast.

No golden light on the land this morning.

and it's a bit furious  for a furry friend.

11th Feb 17, Embleton Bay, 8am

Dreich we would call it in Scotland.

Wet, cold and windy and the seascape was naturally monochrome

spring or winter?

6th February 2017, Embleton Bay, 8am

In my 'winter' season our normal dog-walk time is before sunrise. Today the sun was rising before I got to the beach.

Although there are hints of spring when you feel the warmth of the sun, tt was the coldest it's been at only -2C.

A unique view?

4th Feb 2017, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

The view is not unique but every day is different and the moment will never be repeated exactly the same.

Each day is unique

More New Light

3rd February 2017, Dunstanburgh, 8am

It was something of a dull walk up to the castle with the sun rising behind a bank of cloud.  We climbed up to the castle fence for a fine view north over Embleton Bay, Newton and up to Beadnell.

As we walked back the sun rose out of the cloud and we were in the right place at the right time for my favourite alignment of sunrise and castle.

This happens twice a year and I took a very similar shot in 2008 which I called "New Light Through Old Windows" It's still one of my all time favourite photographs and is my Northumberland Photo Training logo.

Although the alignment happens regularly, I've not seen this colour of sky since that shot in 2008.
