Sunny Beach

29th April 2013, Embleton Bay, 8am

Bright and sunny but a very chilly wind whipping across the sand.

After The Rain

27th April 2013, Embleton Bay, 7am

We started off with big clouds all around and some rain in the air but it was due to pass over us and away and so it did.

In one direction the clouds headed off West and in the other the blue skies showed promise of a bonny day.

Not a Cloud in The Sky

26th April 2013, Embleton Bay, 8am

Not a cloud in the sky when we arrived on the beach this morning. A chilly wind from the SW which could be sheltered from and I sat and watched the swallows zipping along the dunes. They were hard to count as each bird had a strong shadow just as black as the bird itself. The birds and their shadows flitted, twisted and dived after insects as such a speed that a mere human eye had no chance to keep up.

Daisy's shadow is as pretty as she is.

A new view of the beach huts from the highest point of the dunes.

The golf course tractor was on the beach harvesting sand for their bunkers.

rocks

24th April 2013, Embleton Bay and Howick

Down to Embleton Bay and then Howick for today's PhotoWorkshop. Very changeable light with dark clouds and bright intervals. Great photography weather.

In the dunes the dandelions are amongst the first flowers to appear and this red-tailed bumblebee was there to take advantage. He was here yesterday too. Protecting bees is very much in the news these days. The UK government is about to block EU legislation that aims to protect bees from damage by harmful pesticides. This is not a party political issue - all politicians are very short-sighted but they listen to voters opinion if there's enough of us shouting.

Please send the environment minister an email TODAY click here Thanks.

The view from the dunes...

On the beach, the sand has been washed away leaving rocks where there used to be no rocks.

The latest in my occasional series of photographs of whinstone with sand patterns. Pointy headed man anyone?

At Howick, the battle between light and dark raged out over the North Sea

Meanwhile my eye was drawn to the texture of the light and dark on the shore rocks.

beach views

23rd April 2013, Embleton Bay, 9am

Jan and Martyn joined me for today's PhotoWorkshop and we found some different views of Embleton Bay on a bright and breezy day.

A different view of barnacles.

The brisk wind has deposited sand into the cracks in the whinstone outcrops.

Early's Worth It

18th April 2013, Beadnell Bay, 6pm

Wind has blown away the dry, loose sand from around the stones leaving each one perched on a pedestal. Every single, tiny stone for a hundred yards was like this

20th April 2013, Embleton Bay, 5:30 am

Up early but it was well worth it. I hope you agree!

This old tree root has been on the blog before when it was a mile S of here.  Just as picturesque in its new position.

It's the season for 'sea gooseberries' to be washed ashore.  Particularly beautiful in the morning sun.

Part of an old wreck I suspect.  Having walked by this on many low tides I finally managed to make a photograph from it.

Any Old Iron

15th April 2013, Embleton Bay, 8am

The sea has stripped away 4 or 5 feet of sand and left the S end of Embleton Bay resembling a shingle beach. In amongst the stones are a few bits of old iron. I think these are fence posts that were screwed into the sand to support barbed wire during WWII. Eyewitness accounts I've read say that during the war the beach was closed to the public and completely covered in barbed wire.

[added 20th April - I now have 4 of these at home as they'd been left by the bins to be disposed of. My feeling is they shouldn't be thrown away so I'm seeking a home for these historical, if rusty, relics!]

Along the beach and back via the dunes.  Both Daisy and I enjoy the views from up here...

Return to Craster

10th April 2013, Craster harbour and Craster shore, 9am

This morning's PhotoTrail was a bit grey overhead but there's always something to photograph that doesn't include the sky...
