a trip inland

30th Oct11, Debdon nr Rothbury, 3pm

I was in Rothbury yesterday but didn't have time to stop for photos of the gorgeous autumn colours. So we were back today for a fine walk on a warm autumn day...

three mornings

28th Oct11, Embleton Bay, 9am

It was a beautiful, bright morning on Friday for Jon's training course. A chilly wind but nice to be out and about...

29th Oct11, Embleton Bay, 9am

Less blue sky but much more character in the light for Steve's training course on Saturday. The peach coloured sky hung around behind the castle for ages after the sun was well up in the sky.

30th Oct11, Low Newton, 8am GMT

The clocks went back last night which just confused my body-clock totally as ever.

There was a lovely, gentle golden light waiting for us on the beach this morning.

calm returns

26th Oct11, Newton Links, 8am

After a stormy few days the wind has gone elsewhere this morning and all was still and reflective on the beach.

The sea remains restless, bringing news of distant storms.

Sunrise Story

22nd Oct11, Embleton bay, 6:30 - 8am

Daisy gave me some funny looks when we opened the back door into the dark of night but she happily joined me on the pitch black beach. Her amazing night vision meant she could chase her ball when it was completely lost to my sight.

The camera too struggled to see in the twilight before sunrise so I played around with some handheld shots at very grainy high ISO...

Then a 1 second exposure with deliberate movement of the camera

Soon the light was bright enough for more conventional photography and we walked on taking in different views of the constantly changing light.

Finally the sun came up and daylight would follow.. Time for breakfast...

This morning's free sunrise made me think about materialism:

One old tennis ball
Is all you need to have fun
When you are a dog

Happy Birthday

20th Oct11, Embleton bay, 8am

The blog is 3 years old today! So here's a regular readers' quiz;

Q: What happens the day after a windy day?

A: Big waves

So off we walked; Daisy golden in the morning sun.

Bereft of a toy, she decided she would have my glove off my hand. This was so cute (and it was my fault I forgot the ball) so I had to let her off with it...

the north wind doth blow

19th Oct11, Newton Links, 8am

Another bright day but out and about a wee bit earlier so the light was warm and delicate. It was around 5C with a brisk northerly wind. it's out first properly cold morning and it was nice to wrap up in the old winter jacket.

too bright!

15th Oct11, Embleton Bay & Dunstanburgh Castle, 8:30am

The sun was bright for Joy's training course and it was a lesson in how there's no such thing as bad weather or good weather. On a day like this the light isn't subtle and nuanced but you can always try and capture the brightness of the morning & the joggers, walkers and golfers that share a Saturday morning..

There was lovely light in the shadow of the castle

Stone balancers have been busy amongst the 'cannonball boulders' on the coast

warm welcome

11th Oct11, Newton Links, 7:30am

After a fantastic break in Madeira we're home! Even with a 20 C drop in temperature we had a warm welcome from Daisy and the beach put on a good show for us this morning too.

ghosts in the mist

1st Oct11, Craster to Dunstanburgh, 11am

Good long walk with friends and a bacon sandwich halfway.

Warm but hazy today with very atmospheric shots out to sea.

A ghostly yacht slips by out to sea but the fishermen were far from ghostly as they travelled up from Craster on petrol powered scooters. I think I have officially seen it all...

This shot reminded me of those rubbish photographs purporting to be mysterious, ghostly figures appearing at castle windows. Nothing ghostly about this but a fun composition.
