sunrise to sunset

 31st Jan 2023, Bamburgh, 9am

Bright and cold.

Sun on the dunes and wind on the sea.

As the morning went on, the waves got bigger as the tide came in.  The breakers were spilling over in waterfalls down Stag Rock.

31st Jan 23, Holy Island 2pm

Off to Holy island for a commercial photo job.

Job done I headed home as the sun set.  It's the best place for sunsets in Northumberland.

still stopping

 27th Jan 23, Warkworth, 8:30am

I always have time to stop for a photo or two even when I'm running up and down the coast.

At one point I crossed through the dunes and arrived on the beach to see the shadows of this piece of wood The photo was irresistible.

window of opportunity

 25th Jan 2023, Boulmer to Howick, 8am

A lovely sunrise run.

The sun only had a small gap to rise into but it made the most of its short opportunity to shine.

I stopped on the path for a photo and was pleasantly surprised to find the rocks lit with a beautiful light.

On the way back I ran into the brightness of the new day.

cool

 24th Jan 2023, Buston, 3pm

This morning was unseasonably warm but it had cooled down by this afternoon.

signs of seasons

19th Jan 2023, Warkworth, 8am

Each of these photos says "winter" to me but with varying degrees of subtlety.

Only at this time of year does the sun rise close to Coquet Island. In the summer the sun will rise well to the north.

Waves rolling in from a big swell are not impossible at other times of year but much more of a winter thing.

Icicles on the beach are a much more obvious sign of a cold snap (and a lot of rain prior to the freezing temperatures). Today they were dripping and thawing in the sun.

There is warmth in the sun now, the days are noticeably longer, birds are bright in breeding plumage and their calls are spring-like. Snowdrops and other bulbs are pushing through the frozen soil. Despite the sub-zero temperatures this morning, all around us are hints of spring to come.

light, colours and movement

 17th Jan 23, Bamburgh, 8am

As the sunrise faded, the waves started to roll in.

sudden snow

 16th Jan 23, Shilbottle, 3pm

A gorgeous run down the old railway. -2C but no wind and bright sun.

16th Jan 23, Rothbury, 9am

Snow arrived last night and it's now so cold it'll likely stay for a while

changing times

 14th Jan 23, Warkworth, 9am

It had been raining all night but the rain had stopped when we got to the beach.

As we walked the clouds rolled off to the east and blue skies appeared followed by a warm sun.

just made it

 12th Jan 2023, Embleton Bay, 8:20am

These calming scenes of sunrise don't reveal the behind the scenes urgency to get to the beach on time.

I made it but running was involved.
