interpreting a legend

 31st December 2023, Rothbury, 9am

We had a trip to the wonderful Biscuit Factory art gallery yesterday.

Seeing the work of many artists displayed there is always inspiring. The way that some artists interpret a landscape or other facet of nature fascinates me. How to do that with photography is a challenge.

Then I read this quote today in an obituary of legendary photographer Elliott Erwitt:

“Colour is descriptive. Black and White is interpretive.” …and I know exactly what he means.

everyday art

 30th December 2023, Warkworth, 9am

Every day the patterns on the beach are redrawn by the tides and another piece of art is created for a few hours.

freezingly bright

 26th December 2023, Warkworth, 9am

After a very wet Christmas Day it was lovely to have a freezingly bright Boxing Day wander up the beach

solstice running

 22nd December 2023, Morpeth, 3pm

As I ran back along the river I had to divert down to the riverbank to get a proper view of the sunset.

morning and afternoon

 19th Dec 23, Bamburgh, 9am

A huge bank of cloud with a sharply defined edge dominated the sky to the south.

19th Dec 23, Bamburgh, 3:30pm

A pleasing sunset from the castle gates over towards Cheviot and Hedgehope.

Curious bright clouds well after sunset.  I thought these might be noctilucent clouds but they're a summer phenomenon apparently.   They're clearly high altitude ice clouds of some sort.

canny clouds

 17th Dec 23, Warkworth, 8:30am

Just in time to catch a beautiful sunrise illuminating some great clouds.

'up north'

 15th Dec 23, Alnmouth, 8:30am

Just in time for a quick check of sunrise before heading further north for today's photo training.

15th Dec 23, Embleton Bay, 10am

Quite grey later in the morning - ideal for monochrome...

 2nd December 2023, Warkworth, 9am

The first photos could be any season, the second one is definitely winter...

fascinating changeability

 1st December 2023, Warkworth, 8am

I waited in the car until the snow stopped and the shower headed off to the north.

Fossils in the sandstone.  I'm told they are Stigmaria, the roots of giant lycopods (nearest modern relatives are club mosses, but these ancient plants were massive at 30m plus)

sinking

 28th Nov 23, Bamburgh, 9am

Beautiful golden light but freezing cold wind along the beach.

28th Nov 23, Bamburgh, 4pm

Beautiful light as the sun sank in the west

rainbow closing in

 27th November, Warkworth, 9am

It all started off sunny but the distant rainbow suggested there were showers about.

Sure enough the rainbow became more and more beautiful as the shower approached.  We didn't get very wet in the end.

21st November 23, Bamburgh, 4pm

Winter sunset over the village from the castle ramparts

22nd Nov 23, Bamburgh Castle,

A simple almost abstract composition of angles and natural curves
