Christmas ramble

On the path to sunrise

The sun broke the horizon with all the usual splendour but what caught my eye was the way the sun lit up the glass at the top of Coquet Island lighthouse. When I got home I found I'd also caught a distant fishing boat with its companion flight of gulls.

14th December 2021, Embleton Bay, 8am

Here in good time for a nice sunrise...

The Embleton burn has taken a different path recently where it meets the sea by the golf clubhouse. A lot of WW2 anti-tank blocks are visible for the first time in many years. I was pleased to find a date written in the cement by one of the Home Guard who cast the blocks in 1940. The rest of the date is intriguingly hidden under the water and sand. I like to think it was inscribed with the tip of a bayonet but I may be getting overly romantic! Also visible is a good length of the steel rope that once linked all the blocks. It’s rare to see this nowadays. There’s also the remains of a small pillbox built of cement sandbags that was perhaps hidden in the line of blocks. There was originally a double row of these blocks guarding this weak point in the dunes against the invasion threat. After the war several of them were moved up the beach a bit to help reduce erosion of the dunes. Those ones are buried under sand right now but appear from time to time and have lots of carvings on them too.

An absolutely cracking day for a guided walk with guests from HPB Lucker Hall.

It was quite warm under the wintry sun and the sky above the castle was breathtakingly beautiful...

A damp and chilly walk on the snowy moors.  It was a lovely invigorating walk.  Daisy stayed warm at home.

Down in Rothbury the Coquet is up a bit.

The tracks of a seal that’s been up the beach during the night. 

Its tubby body in the middle and two wee flippers. I think it must’ve fallen asleep at high tide then woken up a long way from the sea. 

It’s obviously safely back swimming about with his pals now

Another sunrise delayed by cloud at the horizon but when the sun eventually rose clear it was a beautiful morning.

It's always fun when there's snow on the beach.  Although there was a brisk wind there was no sand flying as it was all frozen in place!

We walked right up to the breakwater at Amble but it was so frozen and icy there was no way I was venturing out there today!
