absence makes the heart grow fonder

19th December 2013, Low Newton, 8am

It's been a busy week and today was the first day we made it to the beach for ages. It was, of course, as beautiful as ever
The soft blue light of pre-dawn gradually warmed to orange as we stood on our vantage point above the bay.

takes your breath away

11th December 2013, Low Newton, 8am

A beautiful morning with gorgeous clouds

The first hint of sun at the horizon

Here she comes...

I've taken photographs from this angle before but the colour in the clouds was breathtaking this morning

Back to the beach and Daisy spots another dog half a mile away!

voices from the past

10th December 2013, Low Newton, 8am

These WW2 tank traps are now used to protect the dunes from erosion. They've been uncovered by last week's tidal surge and this morning I noticed the writing on them for the first time.

Clearly written in the wet cement it dates the words to 70 years ago. To save you turning your computer upside down this one seems to say "This way to Heligoland" (an island off the German coast)

I sat in the grass photographing these decaying winter leaves when a friend came along to 'help'

Daisy is learning to recall to the whistle and she came straight over and sat this morning. Good Girl !

Red Sky Warning

2nd December 2013, Dunstanburgh, 7am

As the old saying has it: Red Sky in the morning, Shepherd's warning.

This red sky was the harbinger of nothing more than a particularly fine sunrise - These photographs were taken well before actual sunrise - I was there around 7:15 and the sun rose at 8:11.  You have to get up early to get the best of nature.

another new angle

1st December 2013, Embleton Bay, 8am

It's getting hard to find something new to say and a new angle for a photograph when the sunrise and Dunstanburgh Castle are so obvious and beautiful.

early dark

27th November 2013, Christon Bank, 3:30pm

As we get close to winter solstice the sunset is in its full glory by 3:30pm and it's all but dark by 4:30.

This beautiful sky was photographed and shared on facebook by photographers the length and breadth of Northumberland

28th November 2013, Low Newton, 8am

...and then there are the winter days where the colour disappears completely and b/w photography is the thing.

same but different

26th November 2013, Embleton Bay, 8am

Another frosty morning and the car was an igloo. Since I was convinced by a friend that warm water doesn't crack your windscreen I have a new quick start on such mornings.

It was well worth getting up for any way...

A shot not dissimilar to yesterday but it shows how the same time and same place still gives a unique view every single day.

end to end

22nd November 2013, Howick 3pm

We walked in shadow but on top of the bank above the path the sun was setting brightly illuminating Daisy's fur.

24th November 2013, Bowden Doors 3pm

We arrived on the moor above Belford just as the sun set like Cheviot was a volcano...

...then walked along the deserted, cold crags where I used to rock-climb on warm summer days of youth.

25th November 2013, Embleton Bay 8am and 3pm

Dawn...

golf colours in nature

22nd November 2013, Low Newton, 8am

So nice to be out and about on a peaceful beach in calm weather after yesterday's storm.

Pastel shades are much beloved of the golfing community but they have their origin in nature's palette.

Here we have baby blue, gorgeous grey, pastel pink, pleasant peach and brilliant beige

come snow come shine

17th November 2013, Boulmer, 10am

Lugworm hunters on the beach at low tide.

18th November 2013, Low Newton, 3pm

The sun was dropping to the horizon and giving a 'golden hour' quality to the light.

A lonely hawthorn bush against pastel pink clouds

19th November 2013, Low Newton, 8am

The big clouds to the left of this scene balance the composition but they were bringing snow

before they arrived we met old friend Buffy who's a regular visitor to our little corner of the world.

The first winter precipitation of the year was like micro-hail. Soon the proper snow started and the camera was put away in a deep pocket.
