tiny spring

22nd March 2015, Embleton Bay, 6:30am

A frosty car and a chill in the air. It didn't feel very much like spring.

But when you listen, the birds are in full chorus (although they've yet to be joined by the summer warblers) and they are as bright as they can be.

Gold finches are bursting with colour and blackbirds are glossy and perfect. (We have a blackbird with a white head around here just now and he's very striking).

When your eyes get tuned in there are tiny signs of spring all around although for now they're fighting against the morning frosts.

Eclipse

20th March 2015, Alnwick, 9:30am

The partial eclipse - about 95% in Northumberland. It was too bright to photograph but then it went behind thin cloud and that made it much easier...

The moon crossed the sun from right to left.  I found you could view the spectacle either as the black disc crossing the sun or as a crescent of sun changing shape.  Two different perspectives that seems to need a shift of thinking.

It's one of those coincidences in nature that the Moon (3,500 km diameter and 384,000 km from Earth) appears pretty much the same size as the Sun (1,400,000km diameter and 150,000,000 km from Earth)

Close to maximum

spring springs

1st March 2015, Low Newton, 7:30am

Sylarks were singing high in the blue sky and the first primroses of the year were flowering in the shadows. It was a spring day and daisy rested in the warm sun.

2nd March 2015, Embleton Bay, 4:30pm

What used to be evening walks under starlight are now late afternoon sunshine walks.
