thinking thoughts

27th February 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

Daisy watches the world go by from our favourite vantage point in the dunes. I think she could sit here all day with the chilly wind ruffling her fur.

28th February 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am In the shadows there are patches still frozen from the night's frost. But out on the sand the 1st day of spring has brought warm sunshine and a nice light breeze. A day to hang about and think thoughts

Paws paddle in waves
that in winter were too cold
Now tempting feet too

grotto

26th February 2014, Howick, 8am

Cold wind, warm sun.

Someone had placed limpet shells on every horizontal ledge in the sandstone. A very beautiful effect.

lunch out

22nd February 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

I sat in the dunes watching the world go by and was quite taken with these foot and paw prints

24th February 2014, Beadnell, 1pm

I needed some pictures of Beadnell harbour for a holiday let website so we had a rare lunchtime trip to the beach.

old haunts

21st February 2014, Newton Steads,7:30am

I used to bring old Trooper down to this little corner at the extreme south end of Beadnell Bay every day and I would throw his scraggy old ball and he'd catch it and take it to somewhere of his choosing, close to me but never straight to me. These days Daisy doesn't really do games and there's livestock in the winter so we haven't been this way for a while. Today I followed my nose and we ended up in our wee corner again and it really is a beautiful place to start the day. There was no-one else on the sand as far as I could see. One man's loneliness is another man's joyous solitude...

Thursday 20 February 2014

on the lead

20th February 2014, Newton Point,4pm

A break in the grey weather this afternoon but banks of cloud are heading this way from the West.

Daisy's now firmly on the long lead after too many wandering incidents of late. She was away over an hour this morning having suddenly abandoned a game of ball-chasing on the beach to sprint off up into the dunes, and beyond, faster than I could ever catch her and completely oblivious to any commands.
Fortunately she's very good on the lead so we'll adapt to the new regime quite easily.

back end

16th February 2014, Embleton Bay, 7:30am

Beautiful sunrise at low tide on Embleton Bay. A few photographers about so I stuck to the top of the big dune. Daisy's in both of these photos but she's more obvious in one than the other...

Moods

13th February 2014, Low Newton, 5pm

After a long, wet day the rain stopped so we headed off into the gathering gloom. On top of our favourite hill I sat and watched & listened to the world while Daisy watched & listened too. As the threatening clouds blustered overhead and specks of rain dotted around, the wind was like an icy slap in the face. Still we sat, Daisy in her furs, me in a warm jacket as cosy as summer in my coccoon.

How apporpraite for Valentine's Day that the birds have paired up on the wires.

14th February 2014, Low Newton, 9am

After yesterday's 'moody' shot I was asked to share a happier one...

Lovely sunny afternoon after a damp grey morning.

It was so nice on the beach that we didn't want to leave...

Northumberland rocks

10th February 2014, Embleton Bay, 8am

After a weekend away in NW Scotland (which was beautiful but rather wet) it was sheer delight to be back on our Northumberland beaches as the sun came up.

The morning light on the whinstone rocks.  These ones have recently been uncovered by the heavy seas so they are devoid of any seaweed.

weather break

6th February 2014, Embleton Bay, 9am

Today's training course with Andrew was very pleasant.  We were a bit lucky to find a gap in the weather although it started quite dull.

Milo kept us company for a while...

Distant showers made for sunny patches - here looking back to Low Newton

By the time we headed back a few others were out and about enjoying the sunshine.

Woodland notion

4th February 2014, Howick shore, 8am

This morning's grey clouds blew away to leave a grateful warm sun and a sky as blue as a holiday.   In my right ear the curlews called from their winter beaches and in my left the skylarks were in springtime song. Beautiful Northumberland.

Today I had a notion to look at trees and I found the snowdrops out in full bloom on the woodland floor...

Daisy had a good run on the sand at Howick Bay and then lay down for a rest.

Monday 3 February 2014

a few sunny days

1st February 2014, Long Nanny, 4pm

Spring High Tide covers surrounds the tank traps creating a nice fusion of textures (iphone image).

2nd February 2014, Dunstanburgh, 8am

It's that time of year when we see the (non-mystical) alignment of the rising sun and the Lilburn Tower of Dunstanburgh Castle. It's appeared many times on this blog but every time slightly different. I call this effect "New Light Through Old Windows" (The starburst is caused by using a small aperture on the camera)

Meanwhile Daisy dotted around inadvertently posing as usual

2nd February 2014, Newton Links, 2pm

We walked the length of Beadnell Bay in the chilly sun.
