31st March 2014, Craster Harbour

For today's 1:1 PhotoTrail with Pam we hung about Craster and the coast. I took a fancy to rope...

misty woods

30th March 2014, Fallodon Woods, 8am (BST)

I thought it would be a bit bleak on the beach in the grey mist so I went in search of interest in the woods.

These shots are all straight out of the camera.

Last year's beech leaves hold on right through to the spring and give a flash of colour in the half-light of the deep woods.

Daisy in full flight...

27th March 2014, Low Newton, 8am

It was all about big waves this morning as breakers filled the bay with a stiff Easterly behind them

27th March 2014, Newton Point, 3pm

still the waves crash into the shore.

Solvitur Ambulando

26th March 2014, Newton Links, 8am

I was cocooned this morning, snug in my jacket so the bitingly cold wind whistled around me but not through me, and yet I could feel and enjoy the sun's warmth on my back.  Someone said 'there's no such thing as bad weather - just the wrong clothes'.

There's nothing like a nice walk of a morning.  If you give them a chance, the rhythm of your feet and the fresh clear air can lull you into a pleasantly relaxed state of mind.

Focussing on my breath and my steps, I banish angry, worried, negative thoughts by filling my walking world with what's around me.  I use the senses to see and hear nature and to endeavour to enjoy each moment of this fragile life.

Today I could hear skylarks, the wind whistling, the sea over the dunes, the curlews in the fields: Music to my ears and all set to the rhythm of my steps.

These are creative times too.  By bringing my attention to the moment I see photographs all around me; 'click' here, 'click' there;  words and ideas come into my mind and thoughts and decisions come into focus just as the images in the camera do.

Solvitur Ambulandum means "it is solved by walking"; and it can be if you let it.

Lazy morning

23 March 2014, Low Newton, 5:30am

Up in time for sunrise this morning. In fact I had a lie in as I woke at 5 but lazed in bed until 20 past...!

Before the dawn and the beach was semi-dark as the sun waited its turn.

First thing in the morning the gulls fly up and mooch about seeing what's what

Almost 90 degrees to the sunrise and the sky is more subtle but equally beautiful in this direction too

A favourite pre-sunrise moment of mine when the clouds have glowing edges like embers on a fire.

From behind a cloud the sun lights up the sea. The sea has such a beautiful texture that it's worth a photograph all of its own.

The sun popped out between the clouds making the light on the sea that bit harsher so I included a wee bit of sky in this one.

Saturday 22 March 2014

sitting with masters

22nd March 2014, Berwick upon Tweed, 3pm

I'm a big fan of LS Lowry - I often try to include little figures in my landscape photographs (see 16th March) but he also painted beautiful abstract, minimalist seascapes.

You don't need to go to Salford to learn about him. Lowry spent many holidays in Berwick-upon-Tweed and there is a trail of information boards around the town (the boards are cutely mounted on easels at locations where Lowry sketched).

Here is his painting of the end of the bridge along with a photograph from the same location today.

When I say the same location, you can sit on exactly the same bit of the bridge parapet that he did, and it's interesting to see how he interpreted the scene.

Berwick pier and the famous wee lighthouse

too late

22nd March 2014, Embleton Bay, 7am

Too late for sunrise but there in time for the golden light and bonny blue skies.

Looking back towards Low Newton village from our favourite spot.

Two sides of a sight hound

21st March 2014, Howick Shore, 4pm

Down to Howick on a sunny afternoon.

We met Kai the Saluki cross lurcher. I thought Kai was like Daisy on a night out - just a bit smoother, sleeker, and more glam.

stop, thief!

21st March 2014, Newton Links, 8am

The wind is West-ish which means the beach is sheltered and there's no sand flying about. I lay in the sun while Daisy dug a hole and then she stole my hat. I think that's what she's planning here...

added: Someone wrote a French post on my Twitter feed so I looked it up and found this nice quote - I don't know where it's from but it's appropriate... "Je me promène à pied , le nez au vent , l' oeil aux aguets". (I walk on my feet, my nose to the wind and with a watchful eye)

people counting

15th March 2014, Embleton Bay, 12:30pm

A fine walk from Beadnell bay to Embleton Bay. It was busier than I'm used to but when you're with friends and chatting it doesn't matter and the scenery is just as beautiful...

16th March 2014, Embleton Bay, 7am

Normal service is resumed on a beautiful, bright and breezy morning with only a couple of fellow early birds, an old friend and magnificent views for company
