Waves and Wind

23rd Dec 2012, Howick shore, 8am

Finally the rain has paused and there was a glimpse of clear skies this morning. The wind was brisk from the SW and it was sweeping the tops off the big waves.

As we made our way back home along the flooded path the sun started to give some colour to the morning sky above the Bathing House.

Grey

18th Dec 2012, Embleton Bay, 3pm

There have been so many bright sunrise colours on the blog of late - it's time for some grey afternoon tones.

round the corner

15th Dec 2012, Embleton Bay, 8am

As we headed South from Low Newton it was building up to be a nice sunrise and the reflections on the beach were quite simply beautiful to behold.  All three of today's photos are straight out-of-camera.

It was only really when we went round the corner of the bay that today's amazing waves came into view. Towering breakers crashed into the beach and the stiff SW wind picked up the spray from the wave tops and threw it way up into the sky. Only the chill of the wind and a bored dog got me moving again as I could have stood and watched the spectacle before me for ages. Each wave different and filled with so much energy.

Revisited

13th Dec 2012, Dunstanburgh, 8am

Yesterday was clear and bright and the world was frozen. On such a clear frosty morning the expanses of the golf course are enticing for a running hound and a photographer. It was a fine sunrise and I took many photos similar to every other nice sunrise at the Castle until I found this frozen pool which gave a different view.

With the sun above the horizon Daisy glows pinkish in the warm light.

storm passing

10th Dec 2012, Dunstanburgh, 8am

Not far from the car we got caught by a hailstorm that came in off the sea. We sheltered in the lea of a WWII pillar box until it passed by and went inland.

Here's the view West from out shelter

The stormy clouds pulled away like a curtain and revealed a beautiful sunrise behind them.

Ripples

6th Dec 2012, Embleton Bay, 8am

Yesterday's snow has frozen into ice and the beach is white above the high water line.

We were on the beach in time for sunrise armed with the new camera. It was a bit chilly to start learning its new features when all I really wanted was the camera back in my pocket and the my gloves back on as soon as possible.

The sun wasn't above the horizon at beach level but it's first rays were hitting the windows up the hill at Low Newton

The snow has filled the footsteps and ripples in the sand. I'm getting used to seeing this every winter but it's odd to see a snowy beach for the first time.

snowbound

5th Dec 2012, Christon Bank, 8am

First snow of winter.
The woods are just a bit white
Man's world in chaos

This is the first shot from my shiny new camera. For those interested in such things I've been shooting this blog for 4 years on Canon G7 and G9's (and the iPhone occasionally) and I have now bought a brand new Canon G15. Nothing fancy just a very well made, well spec'd photographer's camera.

Here Comes The Flood

4th Dec 2012, Dunstanburgh Castle, 8am

The field below Dunstanburgh Castle has been flooded most the summer. When it floods it recreates the mere that was here in the 14th Century when Dunstanburgh Castle was built. The purpose of the mere was to reflect the castle for dramatic visual effect. Although the castle is ruinous the effect remains.

I like this quirky little enclosure - especially when it floods.

Horizons

3rd Dec 2012, Howick Shore, 4pm

In a field free from livestock Daisy races along the horizon for no good reason except that she can.

all the running about disturbed a flock of oyster catchers who soon settled back down again.

Top of the World

2nd Dec 2012, Embleton Bay, 8am

When we first arrived the sun was just rising into some cloud at the horizon. The sky a spectrum from warm orange through cold, pale blue to the last of the night-time indigo black and the beach an honest reflection of the same.

As we climbed up into the dunes the sun started to break through into clear sky...

...and bathed the landscape and its visitors in a warm, pink light.
